Paying a Chinese hospital with a foreign card
- Most Chinese hospitals are paid in RMB; international departments are the most used channel for insurance direct billing.
- Foreign cards now work in Alipay and WeChat Pay after binding, and cash remains accepted at hospital cashier windows.
- US Medicare does not cover treatment in China; private international insurers may, depending on the policy.

How the money moves
Hospitals in mainland China bill in RMB. As a foreign self-pay patient you generally have three paths:
- International department direct billing. Where a hospital runs a true international department (our Nanjing hospital pages note which do), it usually has a commercial-insurance desk that can bill global insurers directly.
- Card payments via mobile wallets. Visa, Mastercard and other foreign cards can be bound to Alipay and WeChat Pay; both publish English setup guides. Daily limits apply.
- Cash or UnionPay at the cashier. Still universally accepted inside hospitals.
