How do I pay at a Chinese hospital, and will they ask for a deposit?

Outpatient care is usually paid step by step before each test or prescription, often by QR code. For admission, hospitals typically require an upfront deposit; the U.S. Embassy says travelers are usually asked to post one, and one Beijing patient reported a 30,000 RMB deposit that was refunded after the bill was settled. Credit cards may not always work.
